Camp Pendleton begins at the northern city limit of Oceanside and runs for about seventeen miles up the coast. The Marine Corps opened the base in 1942 on the old Rancho Santa Margarita, and it remains one of the largest in the country. Marines and their families have been part of daily life in Oceanside ever since.
